These “do-it-yourself” methods have caused so much harm to people’s teeth that the American Dental Association issued a policy in 2017 educating patients against the potential damage of unsupervised at-home teeth-straightening.

“The intention behind do-it-yourself teeth straightening is to save money, but it often ends up in disaster,” Fulop-Goodling says.

The American Association of Orthodontists has also noted that DIY teeth-straightening methods can create serious new dental problems involving not only your teeth, but your gums and bones.
