Smilelove vs. Invisalign

Smilelove vs. Invisalign

Smilelove vs. Invisalign

Invisalign is the most popular option to treat underbites, crooked teeth, overbites, and other orthodontic issues. Invisalign is an excellent and effective alternative to metal braces, brackets and wires.

How do Smilelove clear aligners compare to Invisalign?

In recent years, new teledentistry companies such as SmileLove have popped up on the radar of potential patients.

The teledentistry industry has confused patients who are used to receiving all of their orthodontic treatments in person and now have a remote treatment option. Continue reading to find out which option is best for you!

Smilelove

Smilelove is a popular teledentistry company that offers remote teeth straightening treatment. The way it works is similar to other teledentistry companies. An impression kit is sent directly to your home with directions on how to take your teeth molds. During this process, you have nobody to help you or answer your questions.

You are instructed to mail your teeth molds to the company so a team of doctors can create custom-made teeth straightening plans with clear aligners. You will also receive a digital creation of how your smile will look after your Smilelove treatment has been completed.

During your treatment process, you are encouraged to follow precise instructions provided to you by the SmileLove remote doctors. You will not be instructed to visit an orthodontist for an in-office visit during your treatment. Once your treatment has been completed you will receive a complimentary set of retainers to help maintain your perfect smile as well as a premium whitening kit.

Pros of Smilelove Teeth Straightening Treatment

  •  Doesn’t interrupt your daily schedule
  •  No orthodontic office visits
  •  Treatment in the comfort of your own home

Cons of Smilelove Teeth Straightening Treatment

  •  Can’t ask questions in-person to an orthodontist
  •  Hidden oral issues not detected when taking the molds can cause unforeseen pain during treatment
  •  No orthodontist to contact in case of an emergency due to extreme pain or infection caused by treatment

Invisalign

Invisalign treatment begins with a consultation at your local orthodontist office. Your doctor will examine your teeth and discuss your personalized treatment plan.

During your visit with the orthodontist, you will have the opportunity to ask as many questions related to your Invisalign treatment as you like. The doctor will map out a customized treatment plan and provide you with a precise digital scan so you can see the results before you even begin treatment.

Once you approve of your overall complete look the orthodontist will customize your treatment plan and create your clear aligners. You will be able to insert and remove your aligners in the comfort of your own home while at the same time having easy access to your orthodontist in case of emergencies.

Pros of Invisalign Teeth Straightening Treatment

  • Access to an in-person orthodontist
  • Opportunity to ask as many questions as you like regarding your treatment
  •  Guidance throughout your Invisalign treatment
  •  A place to go during an emergency

Cons of Using Invisalign Teeth Straightening Treatment

  • Finding time in your schedule to visit the orthodontist office
  • Locating an orthodontist office that is close to your home or office

The main difference between SmileLove and Invisalign is access to a licensed orthodontist that you can visit in person. Many patients are eager to get their teeth straightened and often choose teledentistry to provide their treatment due to their convenience. However, during treatment unforeseen issues can appear which can cause serious pain and oral issues that need to be treated by a professional.

Invisalign provides clear aligners and customized treatment while still providing patients with the opportunity to see an orthodontist face-to-face, ask questions and seek emergency attention if needed.

Dental Horror Stories From Dr. Jacquie Smiles That Will Make You Floss

Check out these dental horror stories from NYC orthodontist Dr. Jacquie Smiles that will make you floss your teeth.

Weeks Old Aluminum Foil

“I had a patient come in once complaining about tooth ache. After examing his teeth, I saw something silver. It looked like a small piece of aluminun foil between his back molars. Asking the ptient if he ate something made of aluminum, he mentioned that he ate a sandwhich wrapped in aluminum foil few weeks ago. I used dental floss to remove it and then explained the benefits of flossing and gave him a lesson and the importance of doing it daily to remove food and even aluminum foil from his teeth.”

Falling-Out Tartar Teeth

“One of the patients had such severe tartar buildup around her teeth that there were no gums. It was the tartar that was keeping her teeth in place. Once her teeth were cleaned and the buildup was removed, one of her teeth fell out.”

‘What’s That Smell?’

“One time, I was flossing a patient who admitted to rarely ever flossing. After a few teeth, he stopped me and asked what the terrible smell was. I showed him the chunks on the floss and explained to him that it was the decaying food stuck between his teeth that I removed with the floss. After that experience, he realized the benefits of flossing and became a dedicated flosser.”

Leftovers

“One of my patients came in for an appointment and while I was looking around her mouth, I found some leftover green food in her teeth. This is actually pretty common when patients come into the office after eating a meal and don’t floss first, so I decided to make a light joke and asked her, ‘how was the broccoli that you had for lunch today?’ The patient just looked at me with a blank face and said, ‘I didn’t have anything green today.’ And I said, ‘Yes, you did. It’s right here,’ and proceeded to show her the pretty sizable piece of broccoli I had dislodged from the back portion of her mouth. I could see she was thinking about it as she looked at the piece of food and then her face lit up with recognition. ‘Oh, yeah, I had broccoli with my dinner five days ago!’ she said. And that is why you should always floss after you eat!”

SmileDirectClub’s Former CEO is Back with a New Dental Startup Named Tend

Venture investors are flocking to a growing number of newer dental brands. The SmileDirectClub is among one of the newly public breakout companies which sell teeth-straightening products directly to consumers. SmileDirectClub is respected by analysts, even though its shares have slipped its September IPO.

Swift Health Systems is a teeth related startup that recently attracted private funding. This five-year-old company creates clear braces under the brand name INBRACE and just raised $45 million from VCs. Two-year-old company Henry the Dentist, a mobile dental clinic raised $10 million earlier this year. The Five-year-old company Quip makes oral care products such as electric toothbrushes have garnered about $62 million from investors.

The above-mentioned companies are impressive with the amount of money they raised, a new company called Tend is especially notable for raising $36 million in seed and Series A funding which was led by Redpoint Ventures.

Another impressive aspect of the new company Tend is its desire to reinvent the dentist’s office. It uses tech-heavy dental studios that prioritize the patient’s comfort. Sleek waiting areas, access to Netflix during treatment, and Bose headphones are just a few luxuries they offer. Consumers can book their appointments online, choose their favorite Netflix show to watch while in the chair and learn in advance the cost of their procedure.

The Innovative startup recently opened a flagship space in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood. The studio space offers a selection of high-quality toothpaste including the Italian brand Marvis which comes in distinct flavors. Consumers can choose flavored toothpaste such as ginger, jasmine, cinnamon, and amarelli licorice.

This high-end style dentistry studio space might sound unusual but it does stand out from most traditional dentist offices. Tend is specifically focused on improving the patient’s experience.

Another dental company called One Medical, a venture-backed tech-driven chain that has 70 clinics available throughout the United States has become one of the largest independent groups in the country.

Individual investors in Tends include Tom Lee, the physician who created One Medical and led the company as CEO until the year 2017, Dave Gilboa and Neil Blumenthal of Warby Parker, Bradley Tusk of Tusk Ventures and Zach Weinberg of Flatiron Health.

Tend’s Co-founder and CEO, Doug Hudson was also the CEO of SmileDirectClub for three-and-a-half years beginning from the Year 2013. Prior to becoming CEO of SmileDirectClub he also founded two medical care companies that were later acquired by Simplex Healthcare and Hearing Planet.

Hudson is chasing after a huge market with Tends innovative dental studios. According to the research group IBIS World, the dental market is now a $137 billion industry.

Hudson says, “dentistry has a Net Promoter Score of 1, which is just two points higher than dreaded cable companies. Consumers don’t accept this level of service in any other aspect of their lives so why should they expect it from the dental industry. If Tend can improve the experience for consumers just a little bit and offers competitive pricing, we guess it has a shot.”

As Tend, opens new offices throughout the United States, time will only tell if it’s successful or not. While the world waits to see if it succeeds, investors continue to keep their eyes focused on dental industry opportunities to invest their money.

Invisalign Vs. At-Home Teeth Straightening Companies

In the past, straightening your teeth meant you had to deal with metal braces that were bulky and highly noticeable. In today’s world, it means choosing where to get your removable and comfortable clear aligners.

Invisalign is world-famous for its clear aligners and the amazing results that patients have experienced. A few years ago, the only way to get clear aligners was to visit your orthodontist. However, recently at-home teledentistry has become all the rage.

We compare some of the popular at-home teeth straightening companies including SmileDirectClub, Candid, Byte, Smilelove, SnapCorrect, and Easysmile to Invisalign. The information below provides insight into each teledentistry company, lists the pros and cons, and how they compare.

Invisalign

Your journey with Invisalign begins at your orthodontist’s office. The option is recommended by your orthodontist after careful review and observance of your current oral health.

Ideal candidates for Invisalign clear aligners are those with an open bite, gap teeth, crowded teeth, overbite, crossbite, and underbite. Invisalign is an FDA approved treatment.

The treatment process begins with your orthodontist taking molds of your teeth and carefully creating your clear aligners similar to the way an artist creates a masterpiece.

Before and After

You pick up your entire Invisalign treatment protocol from your orthodontist, discuss the process, get your questions answered, receive advice especially related to your specific treatment plan and schedule a follow-up visit to make sure the treatment is giving you the results you desire.

Pros

  • Custom made just for you
  • FDA approved
  • Easy to clean
  • Easy to insert and remove
  • Boosts self-confidence
  • Direct one-on-one attention from your local orthodontist
  • Invisible aligners
  • Fewer food restrictions

SmileDirectClub Vs. Invisalign

The SmileDirectClub is a leading at-home teeth straightening teledentistry company that was founded in 2014. It produces 3D-printed clear aligners and is known as a major competitor for clear aligner companies like Invisalign.

Your journey with SmileDirectClub begins with receiving an at-home kit or booking a 3D image in a Smile Shop located near you. Your mold will be taken at the shop or you can conduct the teeth mold process in the privacy of your own home.

Once the Smile Direct Club receives your teeth mold a licensed orthodontist or dentist reviews your smile plan remotely. Your aligners arrive in the mail with instructions to follow and when you complete your plan you have the option to order retainers to help maintain your smile.

The main difference between the Smile Direct Club and Invisalign is access to an in-person orthodontist. While a remote orthodontist is licensed and sounds like a great option for those who fear orthodontist offices, it also changes the experience compared to Invisalign where you have access to a real live orthodontist that goes on the teeth straightening treatment with you in-person and every step of the way.

Pros

  • Custom made aligners
  • Less expensive than Invisalign
  • At-home delivery
  • Removable
  • Invisible aligners
  • Fewer food restrictions

Cons

  • An orthodontist doesn’t see you in person before treatment begins
  • There’s no orthodontist to visit in case of an emergency
  • There’s no in-person supervision during the treatment process to ensure your teeth are moving into the right placement.

Candid Vs. Invisalign

Candid Co. offers you a choice to begin the process in a walk-in studio office or have a kit delivered to your front door. The at-home teeth straightening process is similar for all companies. So, this means an impression of your teeth is taken, sent to Candid, a remote orthodontist creates your aligners and you receive your full treatment regimen in the mail with instructions to follow.

The main difference between Candid and Invisalign is in-person care. While Candid invites you to begin the process in one of their local studios you still conduct your entire treatment process unsupervised at home while Invisalign treatment allows you to visit your orthodontist that helps you every step of the way until your newly straight smile is revealed.

Pros

  • Custom made aligners
  • Less expensive than Invisalign
  • At-home delivery
  • Easy to remove
  • Easy to clean
  • Improves self-confidence
  • Fewer food restrictions compared to metal braces
  • Invisibility
  • No office visits

Cons

  • You conduct your own treatment at home without supervision
  • No access to an orthodontist in case of emergency

Byte Vs. Invisalign

Byte offers an at-home kit that provides directions so you can take your teeth molds and send them to the company. Once Byte receives your molds a professional decides if you are an ideal candidate if so, you will receive your clear aligners in the mail with directions on how to proceed with the teeth straightening process.

Not having access to an orthodontist throughout the process is the main difference between Byte and Invisalign. As an Invisalign patient, you have access to in-person appointments with your orthodontist to ensure your treatment is progressing as scheduled.

Pros

  • Custom made aligners
  • Less expensive than Invisalign
  • At-home delivery
  • Easy to use
  • Removable
  • Invisibility
  • No food restrictions
  • Easy to clean
  • Improved self-esteem

Cons

  • No access to an orthodontist during an emergency
  • No idea if your treatment is working properly

Smilelove Vs. Invisalign

Smilelove is another teledentistry company that offers teeth straightening treatment at-home. Your journey with this company begins with receiving an at-home kit to take your teeth molds and return it back to the Smilelove.

Once the kit is received a doctor creates your treatment plan and custom made aligners that get mailed directly to you.

The main difference between Smilelove and Invisalign is access to an in-person orthodontist. Invisalign treatment includes visits to your trusted orthodontist that guides you through the process from day one until your beautifully straight smile is complete.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Custom made aligners
  • At-home delivery
  • Easy to remove
  • Easy to clean
  • No food restrictions
  • Option to order retainers at the end of treatment

Cons

  • No access to an in-person orthodontist
  • No professional guidance throughout your treatment

SnapCorrect Vs. Invisalign

SnapCorrect works similar to all the other at-home teeth straightening companies.

You receive an at-home kit to take molds of your teeth and send it to the company for further review by a remote dentist. Your aligners are created and mailed to you along with directions to follow.

The main difference between Snap Correct and Invisalign is the comfort and confidence knowing Invisalign treatment comes along with in-office appointments with your orthodontist to make sure your teeth are moving into the right position.

Pros

  • You receive custom made aligners by mail
  • Less expensive than Invisalign
  • Easy to use
  • Invisible aligners
  • No food restrictions

Cons

  • No regular appointments with an orthodontist to make sure your teeth are moving into place correctly.

Easysmile Vs. Invisalign

Easysmile offers an at-home teeth straightening kit that arrives at your front door. The kit includes instructions on how to properly take molds of your teeth.

Once you complete the molds you return the kit back to Easysmile when a remove dentist professional reviews your molds and creates teeth straightening treatment for you with clear aligners.

Easysmile sends multiple shipments to you with your aligners and teeth whitening treatment throughout the straightening process.

The main difference between Easy Smile and Invisalign is access to an orthodontist from the very beginning of treatment. Invisalign treatment includes in-office visits to an orthodontist throughout your entire treatment to ensure everything is going as scheduled.

Pros

  • Custom made aligners
  • At-home delivery
  • Easy to remove
  • Easy to clean
  • No food restrictions
  • Improves self-confidence

Cons

  • No access to an in-person orthodontist to make sure your treatment is going as scheduled.

Teledentistry Vs. Local Orthodontist

Overall, teledentistry companies offer teeth straightening service in the comfort of your own home and evaluate your progress by having you send them teeth pictures or scheduling video conferences. This sounds like a great option for people who are afraid of dentists or don’t have time in their schedule for appointments. However, one main issue that has come to light over the years is hidden dental issues that don’t show up on the at-home teeth molds.

Sometimes the condition of the gums, oral problems or underlying issues can’t get detected. After treatment begins some patients are experiencing severe pain and teeth aren’t moving into place properly.

Invisalign treatment is an excellent option to ensure you are receiving the attention needed to create a straight smile, healthy gums, and overall good oral health.

Orthodontists have the power to prescribe Invisalign treatment which includes periodical office visits just to make sure everything is going as scheduled. The office visits also offer a sense of comfort and confidence that your smile is going to be excellent when the treatment is complete.

Instagram influencers under scrutiny for not disclosing if they were paid or not for teeth straightening

The American Dental Association has been actively filing federal lawsuits against teledentistry companies that are breaking rules set in place to protect the public. The latest battle is addressing Instagram influencers that are being paid top dollar to promote teeth straightening product lines.

Complaints from the dental industry reveal laws governing disclosure of paid advertising and marketing contracts are being broken. Pop stars such as Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, and Shawn Mendes have all mentioned their use of clear aligners and their satisfaction with the results without revealing if they were paid or not.

Currently, the target market for clear aligners is adults and image-conscious teenagers that want straight teeth without the high cost of metal braces, which can cost up to $9,000, including orthodontic appointments.

The lawsuits against teledentistry social media marketing techniques have expanded across the world as the Sydney Morning Herald reports federal regulators have received a series of complaints from the dental industry. The complaints are regarding the marketing of Invisalign aligners by social media influencers and celebrities that have worldwide access.

The complaints are related to companies in the United States including Align Technology and SmileDirectClub. The main claim is related to a former high profile Australian TV presenter as well as more than a dozen social media influencers that promoted Invisalign clear aligners on social media platforms without adequate disclosure.

By not disclosing payments for products and services they promote online is a breach of Australian laws. Specific laws are set in place surrounding social media and marketing that require both parties to disclose any payments, services or products received for their advocacy. This information is revealed under the Therapeutic Goods Advertising Code of Australia. Failing to disclose information is a breach of the code which can cause both the company and influencer to receive a maximum fine up to $1.05 million.

The Competition and Markets Authority in the UK are cracking down on social media influencers by launching an investigation that was sparked by concerns of influencers not properly declaring how they are being paid to endorse services and goods, including clear aligners.

The complaints accused regulators such as the Therapeutic Goods Administration, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency of failing to enforce regulations and rules.

An industry Insider who remains anonymous to protect his job says, “nobody’s even bothering to pretend to follow the law, any benefits are supposed to be declared by people advertising health products. At least the banks have the decency to pretend to follow the law and the ASIC has the decency to pretend they were enforcing it.”

The Insider also stated that he has observed that illegal advertising of medical treatments to children and teenagers is now becoming the norm. “The medical companies have money to splash around to buy market share with social media influencers,” he said.

The dental market has been disrupted due to the rapid growth in the industry. The main concern is the enthusiastic promoters that use techniques that clearly are against the law.

Invisalign clear aligner treatment is also prescribed by orthodontists that require follow-up appointments. Depending on the individual patient’s situation the typical cost of Invisalign treatment by an orthodontist can cost up to $6,500 while the cost of direct-to-customer clear aligner treatment can cost as little as $2,499 due to the limited clinical oversight.

Research has revealed the clear aligner market in the United States is growing at 20% per year. By the year 2025, it is expected to be worth $7 billion. The Australian market is growing at a compound rate of 25% per year and is estimated to be worth $210 Million by the year 2025.

Invisalign released a statement stating, “It is committed to compliance with regulatory requirements. Invisalign clear aligners can only be prescribed by registered orthodontists or dentists.” The Invisalign company’s consumer marketing initiatives were created to build brand awareness and connect customers interested in Invisalign treatment to a registered professional.

Consumers interested in receiving Invisalign treatment are encouraged to visit their local orthodontist office for further assistance. One of the main benefits of receiving in-person Invisalign treatment is access to a licensed and registered Invisalign orthodontist or dentist.
