Invisalign

Invisalign teeth straightening treatment is very popular and is the go-to recommendation of orthodontists in NYC. The treatment could last up to 6 months and fits with the busy schedules of New Yorkers. Once you visit your local NYC orthodontist to address any oral issues that can interfere with Invisalign treatment, the teeth mold process begins.

How It Works

Invisalign treatment is performed by a licensed orthodontist who will be taking a 3D digital impressions of the patient’s teeth. Next, clear aligners are custom-made to move and turn teeth into perfect alignment gradually and will involve changing Invisalign clear aligners every two weeks or as specified by the orthodontist for much better results compared to the at-home aligners.

Everything to Know About Teeth Whitening from a Dentist

Do you drink coffee, wine, tea or juices? The truth is almost every drink and food can stain your teeth. These stains can build up, get darker and make your smile look yellow or brown. Teeth whitening is one of the most commonly requested services dentists hear most. There’s a good reason for the request and it’s called, “social media.” Below you find out everything you need to know about teeth whitening myths from Dr. Jacquie Smiles, an NYC orthodontist.

Generally, people want white teeth to look great in person and have a beautiful smile. However, the high demand for super bright white teeth started about 10 years ago when social media became popular among society.

“The first time you whiten your teeth it removes surface stains, but as you continue with treatment the actual color of the tooth becomes lighter, sometimes even lighter than the original color.”

In today’s world, everyone wants to look their best for confidence reasons and for pictures that get posted on social media accounts worldwide. Whether it’s your first time whitening your teeth or your hundredth, it’s time to discuss some common teeth whitening myths!

Myth #1 – Your Teeth Can’t Get Whiter Than The Original Color

According to Dr. Jacquie Smiles, “The first time you whiten your teeth it removes surface stains, but as you continue with treatment the actual color of the tooth becomes lighter, sometimes even lighter than the original color.”

Myth #2 – Whitening Your Teeth Isn’t Safe

A large number of the population are convinced that whitening teeth isn’t safe. This myth was born from fear of the unknown when teeth whitening first became popular. This common fear was also validated when some consumers tried to use unusual products at home to whiten their teeth but ended up destroying their enamel and discoloring their teeth. Dr. Smiles says, “professional whitening treatment is extremely safe when done properly.” Dr. Smiles has also created the ultra-safe and effective Pop & Prime whitening pen. It’s the only specially formulated whitening pen on the market that doesn’t cause tooth sensitivity.

Myth #3 – Results From Whitening Are Only Temporary

Many consumers complain about how their beautiful white teeth get stained again and they need to repeat whitening treatment more frequently than expected. The truth is, whitening your teeth makes a permanent change to the color of the teeth but upkeep is required to maintain a healthy bright smile. This means when you receive in-office professional whitening treatment, you need to take extra care to maintain a white smile. This means using a whitening pen after consuming your favorite wine, coffee, tea, and other drinks.

As long as you eat or drink whitening your teeth are going to be an ongoing process. You can’t expect to whiten your teeth one time and expect it to last forever. Everyone needs to eat and enjoy that much-needed glass of wine every once in a while. You can enjoy your favorite foods and still maintain a white smile as long as you understand you will need to follow up whitening treatment at some point. Professional teeth whitening treatment that are done in an office is professionally supervised and performed to ensure the best results!

Get your kids smile ready for the new school year

You might have spent summer telling your kids to brush after every meal but while they are at school you lose control over their dental hygiene habits. The good news is, you can still take care of your children’s teeth during the new school year by following the checklist below.

  • Schedule a check-up – Getting your children a check-up sets the foundation for dental treatment throughout the school year and helps give you a clear vision of their overall oral health and future needs. Learning possible dental treatment that will be required during the school year will help you plan accordingly.
  • Carry travel size dental care – Create a travel size dental care kit for your children to use at school. Pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash in a zip lock bag or clean pencil bag for your kids to keep in their backpack. Encourage your children to use the kit after lunch.
  • Protect against injuries – Students that are involved in sports at school need to protect their teeth from injury or damage. Invest in a custom made mouthguard that fits perfectly and feels more comfortable compared to the standard design.  Children are more likely to use mouth-guards that are comfortable to wear.
  • Eat healthily – Your child will eat at least one meal at school. Pack a healthy lunch and a few sugar-free snacks to get them through the day. Celery or carrot sticks are an excellent option because they contain water and increase saliva production. Avoid providing sugary snacks or drinks since the opportunity to brush afterward is limited.
  • Pack a bottle of water – Staying hydrated and drinking water throughout the day helps keep the mouth clean and fight bacteria growth. Fresh clean water is recommended. Avoid flavored waters that contain sugar. There are plenty of water bottle options available at stores and online that feature different colors and designs to make carrying a water bottle fun for kids.

Back to School Orthodontic Tips for Braces

Here are some of the tips for patients who are currently wearing clear aligners, Invisalign and traditional metal braces:

  • Create a kit – Your children can take proper care of their braces while at school by using a convenient kit. A care kit is easy to create by including toothpaste, toothbrush, extra elastics, floss threaders, proxy brushes, and dental floss, plus any other items your child needs for their specific needs.
  • Carry orthodontic wax – There’s nothing worse than a wire breaking and poking into the cheek all day while your child is at school. It’s painful and can be distracting throughout the school day. Pack orthodontic wax in your backpack to use as a temporary fix. Teach your children how to use the wax to ensure they apply it properly while at school.
  • Pack lip balm – Some children feel self-conscious about their lips sticking or getting caught on their brackets while they speak. Lip balm helps the lips glide over the brackets effortlessly and helps your children remain self-confident. Pack lip balm in your child’s backpack in an easy to reach place to encourage them to use it often.

5 Tips for Going Back To School with Braces

Summer is coming to an end and it’s time for the new school year to get started. Chances are your child started wearing braces over the summer and they are feeling concerned about returning to school. You can help your child feel confident and in control of their braces with the helpful tips shown below.

  1. Drink Water

Carrying a bottle of water these days is common. There are plenty of decorative and stylish water bottles to choose from. Sipping and drinking water throughout the school day keeps your child hydrated and their mouth moist. Consuming water frequently helps remove bacteria and particles from brackets and the surface of teeth.

  1. Carry Travel Size Dental Care

The great news is travel size dental care items can be found in almost any store. Create a care kit that includes travel size fluoride toothpaste, a toothbrush, dental floss, flossing picks, threaders, and extra elastics. You can also add orthodontic wax to the kit in case of a wire breaks during class. The wax will sooth the mouth until the situation can be fixed by a professional.

  1. Eat Carefully

There’s a list of off-limit foods students with braces can eat. Make sure your child follows the rules by packing them a healthy lunch and snacks they can carry with them in their backpack. Avoid giving your child sweets like caramel and taffy or any foods that will stick to their braces and cause them issues during school hours. You will be surprised about the amount of attention your child will put towards a piece of caramel stuck in their braces all day.

  1. Brush after Every Meal and Snack

The school restroom is the best place to get brushing done right. Encourage your child to fit in a quick brushing after lunch or any snack they consume during the day. The more often they brush the faster they will become at completing the task. Chances are there are other students that wear braces doing the same thing so your child won’t feel out of place.

  1. Invest in a Mouth Guard

Outdoor activities and sports are popular among students. If your child participates in any sport or class that involves sporting equipment or person-to-person contact it’s time to invest in a custom mouthguard. A customized guard is recommended to ensure it fits comfortably over the brackets and braces. Also, keep in mind a general physical education class and a game of kickball can accidentally cause damage to your child’s mouth if the ball is misplaced. Encourage your child to wear their mouthguard during every sports activity for safety reasons.

Going to school with braces for the first time can make a child feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. Many children hide their braces by talking less and refusing to smile. Encourage your child to be themselves and feel proud about the end results of a beautiful straight smile.
